The English Maple, also known as the Field Maple / Acer Campestre, is a fantastic bonsai choice, prized for its resilience and stunning seasonal transformations. Unlike other maple bonsai varieties, the Campestre Acer stands out with its delicate, frilly, and translucent leaves, making it a unique addition to any bonsai collection.

This hardy species features distinctive five-lobed leaves with rounded tips that shift from lush green in summer to brilliant golden-yellow in autumn. As the only native maple species in Europe, the Acer Campestre is renowned for its vibrant autumnal display and easy-care nature, making it an excellent option for both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts.

The Acer palmatum, commonly known as the Japanese Maple bonsai, is one of the most captivating Maple bonsai species, highly prized for its breathtaking seasonal colour transitions. As the year progresses, its delicate, feathery leaves shift from vibrant green to deep red, making it a true showstopper in any bonsai collection.

Originally cultivated in Japan, the Japanese Acer is distinguished by its elegant trunk structure and striking foliage. Like the Field Maple, this Japanese Maple bonsai responds well to pruning and ramification, allowing enthusiasts to shape and refine its form over time. However, it thrives best with specific care—requiring consistently moist but well-drained soil and protection from intense heat during the hottest months.

We offer a selection of Acer palmatum varieties, including Deshojo, Katsura, and Nomura, each with its own unique charm and colour palette.

The Acer palmatum Deshojo, commonly known as the Deshojo Maple, is a stunning Japanese Maple variety renowned for its vibrant scarlet foliage. In spring, its fiery red leaves emerge, gradually transitioning to lush green in summer before returning to their iconic deep red hue in autumn, creating a striking seasonal display.

Unlike other Acer varieties, this Maple is exceptionally hardy, making it a fantastic addition to any bonsai collection or garden. However, like most Japanese Maples, it thrives best with some shade and protection from strong winds to maintain its delicate, feathery foliage.

Perfect for bonsai cultivation or as an ornamental tree, the Acer palmatum Deshojo offers year-round beauty with minimal maintenance, making it a favourite among enthusiasts.

The Acer palmatum Katsura, also known as the Katsura Maple, is a stunning Japanese Maple variety celebrated for its vibrant seasonal colour changes. In early spring, its delicate leaves emerge in a brilliant orange hue, transitioning to lush green in summer before transforming into a striking golden yellow in autumn. This eye-catching foliage ensures that the Acer Katsura remains a standout feature in any garden throughout the year.

Unlike the Acer palmatum Deshojo, the Acer palmatum Katsura Japanese Maple thrives best in full sun or partial shade, enhancing its rich leaf coloration. Low-maintenance and highly adaptable, it is an excellent choice for both city gardens and traditional cottage gardens. For optimal growth, it prefers slightly acidic, moist, and organically rich soil. Pruning should be done in winter during dormancy to maintain its elegant form.

Ideal for bonsai cultivation or as a striking ornamental tree, the Acer Katsura offers effortless beauty and seasonal interest with minimal upkeep.

The Nomura Maple is known for its rich purple and red changeovers throughout the year before becoming leafless in the winter. It favours the bright sunshine in the spring but partial shade in the summer with a plentiful supply of water.

During the winter months, the Nomura favours water only when the ground dries and has been vaporised from strong sunlight. Unlike the Katsura and Deshojo, the maple doesn’t lose its colour during the changing of seasons and remains a distinctive, rich purple-red.
