Words simply are not enough the express the beauty of this specific tree. The girth of the trunk at the base of the tree is 24cm. It oozes character with its entwined roots forming a powerful nebari – root flare. The bark of this naturally aged bonsai is flaky and the trunk displays a prominent feature uro.

What is an Uro?

A bonsai uro, also known as a bonsai hollow, is a characteristic feature in bonsai art that adds depth, intrigue, and a sense of age to a tree’s appearance. It is a hollow or depression typically found on trunk or along the trunk itself, resembling a natural cavity or knot. The formation of a bonsai uro is a result of various natural and intentional processes.

One of the primary factors contributing to the formation of a bonsai uro is natural aging and environmental factors. Over time, as a bonsai tree grows, it may encounter injuries, diseases, or environmental stressors such as wind, rain, or pests. These factors can cause portions of the tree’s trunk to decay or die back, resulting in hollow areas or cavities. Additionally, certain species of trees are more prone to developing uros due to their growth patterns and susceptibility to damage. We find ‘Uros’ in the wild on naturally growing full grown trees in the woods and forests and try to re-create these in nature on our bonsai trees.

We do this  intentionally; creating or enhancing uros to mimic the appearance of aging and add visual interest to the tree. This process involves carefully carving or hollowing out sections of the trunk to create the desired shape and depth. We use specialised tools such as gouges, chisels, and drills to sculpt the uro, paying close attention to proportion, balance, and overall aesthetic harmony.

The presence of a bonsai uro serves several purposes in bonsai art. Firstly, it adds a sense of realism and authenticity to the bonsai, mimicking the natural aging process of trees found in nature. Secondly, it creates  focal points, drawing the viewer’s attention. Additionally, uros can provide habitat for mosses, lichens, and other small organisms, further enhancing the bonsai’s natural appearance

Supreme Taper of the Trunk

An excellent trunk taper in a bonsai tree refers to a gradual decrease in diameter from the base of the trunk to the apex (top of the canopy), resulting in a visually appealing and natural-looking shape. This taper is a crucial aspect of bonsai aesthetics and is highly valued in bonsai design.

The trunk taper is achieved through careful cultivation and pruning techniques over time. When a bonsai is young, the trunk may have a relatively uniform thickness. However, as the tree matures, bonsai artists selectively prune branches and encourage growth in specific areas to promote the desired taper.

Ideally, the base of the trunk should be wider and thicker, gradually tapering to a narrower diameter as it ascends towards the apex of the tree. This taper mimics the growth pattern of trees found in nature, where the trunk thickens at the base to provide stability and support for the tree’s structure.
