Bonsai Roots – Exposed above the soil

Roots are the one of the most important parts of any tree. The roots of a tree play a crucial role in its overall health and functionality. Functioning as the tree’s anchor, they secure it in the soil and provide stability against external forces. For example, wind and rain. Simultaneously, roots absorb water and essential nutrients from the soil. Acting as the tree’s lifeline for growth and development. Beyond their role in anchoring and nourishing the tree, roots also engage in a symbiotic relationship with soil microorganisms. Thus, aiding in nutrient absorption and promoting overall soil health.
Additionally, roots store energy reserves, ensuring the tree’s survival during periods of stress or unfavorable conditions. In essence, the roots of a tree serve as a vital support system. Sustaining the tree’s well-being and enabling its longevity.
If you go for a walk by a river or through a wood, you will often come across trees which have roots above soil. These exposed roots add so much beauty and character to bonsai trees. Therefore, it is only natural for people to want to recreate this in bonsai.
In the art of bonsai, exposed roots are so important and beautiful that they even have their own name; the nebari. The nebari of a bonsai helps visually balance a bonsai. It helps lead the eye from the pot up the tree.
Exposed roots in no way harm a bonsai. They are completely natural. We hope that you appreciate this wonderful attribute!
Exposed roots, gracefully winding and intertwining with the soil surface provide a visual spectacle. Also, they evoke a sense of age and character in the miniature tree. These roots tell a story of endurance. As they adapt and thrive in the bonsai pot, mirroring the resilience of their larger counterparts in the wild. The intricate patterns formed by exposed roots create a unique aesthetic, showcasing the intricate beauty between the tree and its environment.
