Bonsai Care
Mould on Bonsai Soil

Why is there mould on my bonsai?

It is very common to get some white mould on bonsai soil. It is just a soil-borne fungus that comes from keeping the soil just damp at all times. Thankfully, it is completely harmless to bonsai, and is nothing to worry about. If you do wish to remove it, please use a soft brush, like an old toothbrush, to gently remove the mould.

Watering Your Bonsai Correctly Can Reduce Mould

Watering is the most important part of looking after a bonsai. White mould on bonsai soil could suggest that the bonsai tree is getting a bit too much water. Please keep the soil just damp to the touch at all times to ensure your bonsai tree stays healthy. We have produced a video with loads of watering advice to help you look after your bonsai tree. Ensuring that your bonsai gets the correct amount of water can help prevent and reduce mould. We check our bonsai trees twice a day to see if they need watering.

Air Circulation

Another cause of white mould could be poor air circulation. Please ensure that you position your bonsai tree in a bright location avoiding direct sunlight. Your bonsai will prefer to be in an open location where air can flow around it. Furthermore, please avoid positioning your bonsai in area where it is surrounded by objects that limit the air flow.
