When should I repot my bonsai tree?

When should I repot my bonsai tree? Your bonsai will be absolutely fine in the pot in which it arrives for at least one year. Like all pot plants, bonsai can get pot bound and it is important to give the roots room to grow.

Ideally, you should repot (into a larger pot) or root prune (if going back into the same pot) an indoor bonsai in warmer summer months. You should only repot outdoor bonsai in late February or early March.

All bonsai will need repotting very 1 – 5 years. The exact time depends on the size and type of the tree, and the dimensions of the pot. It is usually obvious when the tree needs repotting, as it begins to look out of proportion in comparison with the pot.

Should I repot a bonsai when it is struggling?

It is very common for people to think they need to repot a struggling bonsai. However, this is just about one of the worst things you can do! When a bonsai is struggling for some reason, it is really important to not disturb the roots in any way, as this can often make the problem worse.
