Why are there bugs on my bonsai?
Like all plants, bonsai get bugs too, most of which are completely harmless. Some bugs are actually beneficial; here at Bonsai Direct, we actually use some ‘friendly’ bugs to keep down bugs that can harm bonsai. This means that we don’t have to use any nasty pesticides, which is a bonus for our wonderful planet!

How do I get rid of bugs in the soil?
Thankfully, most bugs that you find in the soil are completely harmless to bonsai, and they usually disappear within a few weeks. If you do wish to remove them, please stand the bonsai in a container of water for 1 hour so that the water just covers the top of the pot. Then allow to drain. This will hopefully kill anything living in the soil.
How do I get rid of bugs on the tree?
Most bugs that live on the tree are very easy to get rid of. For most of these bugs, you simply need to spray the bonsai with a tested insecticide. Please spray once a week for a month, and then once a month, and ensure you spray under the leaves as well as on top.

If you have bugs that look like fluffy white woodlice, you will need an insecticide soil drench.
PLEASE NOTE: Please do not spray your bonsai with any kind of vinegar mix, even when diluted with water. Vinegar is an acid, which will kill the leaves of the bonsai as well as the bugs.
